Contemporary Jazz 

A dynamic Quartet of creative musicians from the prolific Berlin Jazz scene, together to make a tribute to the wonderful history and diversity of Jazz.Creative saxophonist Uli Kempendorff,  virtuoso guitarist Ronny Graupe, refined bassist Olaf Casimir and passionate drummer Andrea Marcelli, will play a wonderful jazz program of beautiful arrangements of famous standards and original compositions. Expect many colors, dynamics, rhythms and creative sound possibilities.



ULI KEMPENDORFF was born in Berlin in 1981. Jazz Saxophone and Improvisation studies at „Hanns Eisler“ Conservatory in Berlin and at City College, NYC. His work is documented on over two dozen CDs and LPs and radio broadcasts, on labels like WhyPlayJazz, ECM, Enja/Yellowbird, Philophon, jazzwerkstatt or Four Music. Among those are five of his own productions with his groups „Field“ and „Yellow Bird“. Aside from his own projects such as „Field“ he has been active in groups with Ulrich Gumpert, Benjamin Weidekamp, Felix Henkelhausen, Wanja Slavin, Rudi Mahall, Markus Pesonen, Pablo Held, Julia Hülsmann, Tobias Delius, Mike Pride, Christian Weber; he has toured and played with SEEED, Rolf Kühn, Jimi Tenor and ‚Little‘ Jimmy Scott.In 2010, he started the concert series „Serious Series“ which he programmed until 2014. In 2016, he programmed the concert series „In Between Festivals“ in Wroclaw (PL), as part of the city’s European Capital of Culture tenure. This was done in collaboration with Marc Schmolling, Stiftung Zukunft Berlin and MicaMoca. Until 2018 he also co-programmed the series „JAB 105“ at Berlin’s club A-Trane with Gebhard Ullmann.Concerts and teaching brought him to the Ivory Coast, Canada, the US, South America, Mexico and to many countries in Europe. Kempendorff received several grants from the city of Berlin, was a DAAD-scholar from 2006-2007 in NYC and spent a month at the Stadtmühle Willisau in Switzerland as a grantee of the Alfred-Köchlin-Foundation.In addition, he was a founding member and head of the IG Jazz Berlin, a kind of union lobbying for better funding for the arts in Berlin. In this function, Kempendorff also spent time as a spokesman for music in the Coalition of Berlin’s Independent Scene and was active in cultural politics on the state and federal level from 2012-2016.

RONNY GRAUPE – GUITAR Ronny has been touring and playing concerts extensively since 1996 and played concerts all over the globe.Based in Berlin from 2004 on, he had the fortune to work many years with Gropper/Graupe/Lillinger (formerly known as hyperactive kid), Uli Kempendorffs Field, the Rolf Kühn Unit as well as with long-standing ensembles such as Ronny Graupes Spoom, ROWK, Henning Sievert´s Symmethree, Bubaran from Switzerland among others.In 2019 he established Into The Shed – a live-streaming concert series that focuses on the international Jazz and Impro scene in Berlin.In 2021 recordings of his latest quartet Off The Record, the duo Cadotsch/Graupe, the Ronny Graupe Trio and Solo Recordings will be released on his own label Out Of The Shed.In June Ronny received the Jazz Price Germany 2021 in the category „Guitar“.

OLAF CASIMIR Kontrabass. Nach seinem Studienaufenthalt in New York City 1989 bis 1990 folgten bis ins Jahr 1993 mehrere Europatourneen mit “Duke Ellington`s Sophisticated Ladies” u.a. mit Mercer Ellington.1994 gewann Olaf Casimir beim internationalen Kontrabasswettbewerb in Avignon den 1. Preis in der Sparte Jazz.1995 Debütalbum der eigenen Band „Bass Instinct“. Von 1997 bis 2009 lebte er in Hamburg und war dort freischaffend tätig für zahlreiche Produktionen am Deutschen Schauspielhaus sowie für diverse CD-, TV-, und Rundfunk-Produktionen. Seit 1997 ist er Bassist in der Gustav Peter Wöhler Band und von 2004 bis 2012 gehörte er zum festen Live- und Studioensemble von Annett Louisan. 2009 Umzug nach Berlin. Seit 2013 begleitet Olaf Casimir auch das Konzertprogramm “Wegen mir” von Gustav Peter Wöhler.In seiner Vergangenheit spielte Olaf Casimir u.a. mit Künstlern wie Thomas Quasthoff, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Athur Blythe, Till Brönner, Yvonne Catterfeld,  Chico Freeman, Buddy de Franco, Lionel Hampton, Mercer Ellington, Idris Muhammed, Mark Murphy, Tal Farlow, Mundell Lowe, Charlie Bird, Herb Geller, Charlie Antolini, Nils Landgren, Tok Tok Tok u.v.a.m.


Drummer/composer ANDREA MARCELLI moved to the USA in 1989,
spending eight years in Los Angeles and four in New York City.
He has resided in Berlin since 2001. Two of his tunes are included in both
“The European Real Book“ and “The Digital Real Book part 2“. He is
leading an active international musical life, performing with Wayne Shorter,
Don Menza, Allan Holdsworth, Mike Stern, Bob Mintzer, Eddie Gomez,
Ralph Towner, Eberhard Weber, Markus Stockhausen, Palle Danielsson,
John Patitucci, Mike Mainieri, Hiram Bullock, Frank Gambale, Andy
Summers and others. He recorded many albums and two critical acclaimed Cds with legendary Major Label Verve/PolyGram.

– Wayne Shorter wrote: „Andrea Marcelli’s music is vibrant andthought-provoking as today’s events. Andrea is such a chameleon.When I first heard his music, it struck me that he played drums,clarinet, percussion, keyboards and composed in a variety of stylesthat defied classification, moreover, his display of sensitivity andcreative approach to the work produced.“
