Contemporary and Latin jazz
Four Jazz veterans, long-time collaborators, from different countries, but from the interesting Berlin Jazz scene, together again to bring life to a new idea from leaders Draganic and Marcelli. The band will present an exciting Jazz program of original compositions and beautiful arrangements of famous Jazz standards from the American songbook like Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard and John Coltrane.
Virtuoso, German/Montenegrin saxophonist Ben Kraef together with American groovie pianist Marque Lowenthal, Canadian/Croatian swinging bassist Robin Draganic and Italian/American expressive drummer Andrea Marcelli, will perform Contemporary and Latin Jazz at his best.
BEN KRAEF ist ein deutsch-montenegrinischer Saxophonist und Komponist, der in Berlin lebt und sein Studium an der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin abgeschlossen hat. Im Jahr 2007 zog er nach New York City und erwarb 2009 einen Master of Arts am City College of New York. Zu den international renommierten Musikern, mit denen Ben aufgetreten ist und Aufnahmen gemacht hat, gehören Lalo Schifrin, Archie Shepp, Phil Woods, John Abercrombie, Fred Hersch, Gunther Schuller, Tania Maria, John Clayton, Jim McNeely, Peter Herbolzheimer, David Gilmore, Jeff „Tain“ Watts, George Garzone, Herb Geller, Vincent Herring, HR Radio Bigband und der WDR Bigband. Ben ist auch mit mehreren bekannten Popgruppen aufgetreten, darunter „Wir Sind Helden“ und Joy Denalane.Er hat zwei Alben als Leader aufgenommen. Das erste, „Berlin – New York“, erschien bei ACT und wurde mit dem Bassisten John Patitucci, dem Schlagzeuger Marcus Gilmore und dem Pianisten Rainer Böhm aufgenommen. Seine zweite Platte, „Think of One“ (shoebill music), wurde in Trio-Besetzung mit dem Schlagzeuger Albert Tootie Heath und John Patitucci aufgenommen.
MARQUE LOWENTHAL pianist, was born in Boston/USA.
Berlin resident for several decades, he is one of the best pianists in Germany. He played with Birelli Lagree, Tony Scott, Ernie Watts, Ira Sullivan and many others. He is a Sony recording artist with Lyambiko Quartett with whom he has played over 500 concerts in Germany, Europe and The US.
ANDREA MARCELLI – Drummer/composer
born in Rome, Italy.
He moved to the USA in 1989 spending 8 years in Los Angeles and 4 in New York. He is, since 2001, resident in Berlin/Germany. He performed and/or recorded with Wayne Shorter, Don Menza, David Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Harold Land, Markus Stockhausen, Eddie Gomez, Mike Stern, Mitchel Forman, Allan Holdsworth, Bob Berg, John Patitucci, Eberhard Weber, Alphonso Johnson, Jeff Berlin, Palle Danielsson, Arild Anderson, Alan Pasqua, Bob Sheppard, Frank Gambale, Hiram Bullock, Andy Summers, Rick Margitza, and others. During his career he performed in USA, Japan, India, Brazil, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tunisia, Italy, Germany, England, Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Estonia, France, Belgium, Finland, Luxembourg, Lebanon and others.
Andrea recorded many CDS and two acclaimed solo CDs for legendary Major Jazz Label VERVE/PolyGram with his original compositions.
He graduated in 1986 from the L. Refice Conservatory in Frosinone (Rome) in Classical Clarinet, Jazz Composition and Arrangement. Two of Andrea’s compositions are included in „The European Real Book“ and „The Digital Real Book part two“ by www.shermusic.com.
Andrea has more than 200 of his compositions recorded in CDs and
broadcasted world-wide.
Wayne Shorter wrote: „Andrea Marcelli’s music is vibrant and
thought-provoking as today’s events. Andrea is such a chameleon. When I first heard his music, it struck me that he played drums, clarinet, percussion, keyboards and composed in a variety of styles that defied classification, moreover, his display of sensitivity and creative approach to the work produced.“

ROBIN DRAGANIC bassist, born in 1963 in Zagreb raised in Canada and studied at University in Montreal where he had his first band with Ken Vandermark in 1984. He also played in USA, Russia, China and all over Europe. Since 1988 he is one of the most requested bassists in Berlin. Since November 1997 Robin Draganic has been leading the best known Jam Session in Berlin „Robin’s Nest“ at the ‚B-Flat Jazz Club‘ every Wednesday evening. Since 2003 he played over 500 concerts with the Quartet of singer Lyambiko, with Marque Lowenthal, one of the best known Jazz bands in Germany and recorded for Sony BMG.
